Sudan's army grabbed control of the Republican Palace and key buildings in downtown Khartoum after a four-day battle. This dealt a heavy blow to their enemies, the Rapid Support Forces. Army spokesman Nabil Abdalla went on TV to tell everyone they had pushed RSF fighters out of the presidential complex, the big market, and many government offices. The military started this big pushback in September to take back land the RSF has held since fighting broke out last year. The RSF claims these reports are false. They say their fighters still hang around near the palace and have killed 89 army troops during fighting. They put out a message saying, "The battle is not over. We will liberate all positions." A person from the military told news agency Xinhua that a drone attacked people standing in the outer yard of the Republican Palace. This attack killed at least ten people - both soldiers and media workers who were there. Army boss Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan says they'll keep moving forward with attacks. He told people during his visit to Gezira State, "Our forces are advancing steadily, and we will not retreat." The man who speaks for the government, Khalid Ali Aleisir, claims RSF fighters are running away from the capital city and wants them to give up. The army operations leader, Mohamed Abdul-Rahman Al-Belawi, said they plan to attack the airport next, promising to "clear the capital entirely." This war puts the regular army against the RSF group led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. He used to be friends with Al-Burhan and worked as his second-in-command. The fighting has lasted almost two years and killed nearly 30,000 people, according to United Nations numbers. The army has taken back big chunks of central Khartoum since late 2023, along with parts of Bahri city and important areas like Wad Madani. They've also made gains in Omdurman by capturing neighborhoods in Umbada. Even with all these military wins, the RSF still holds onto some territory. They control country areas in Gezira state and several parts of Khartoum city. The fighting continues between these two powerful groups as both sides claim they're winning the upper hand in this long-running conflict that has devastated Sudan.
