Tanzanian Troops Killed in Eastern Congo Clashes.

Two Tanzanian soldiers died in recent attacks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Four others were hurt.

The soldiers were part of a regional peacekeeping mission led by the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The mission's goal is to stop armed groups and bring peace to eastern DRC.

Tanzania confirmed the deaths on Sunday. Col. Gaudentius Ilonda of the Tanzania People's Defence Forces (TPDF) said the attacks happened on Jan. 24 and 28 in Sake and Goma. The injured soldiers are being treated.

The attacks were by the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group. Other SADC countries also lost soldiers, including South Africa, Malawi, and DRC.

South Africa said 16 of its troops were killed on Jan. 23. The M23 was trying to take control of Sake and Goma. It announced it captured Goma on Jan. 27.

The M23 used long-range bombs in the battle. Some hit the SADC base at Goma airport, killing soldiers.

SADC leaders met in Zimbabwe on Jan. 31 to discuss the crisis and offer condolences to the countries that lost troops.

The leaders condemned the M23's attacks. They said the group broke a ceasefire and threatened regional peace. They urged a quick return of basic services in DRC.

Tanzania said it will bring home the bodies of its fallen soldiers. It is working with SADC to care for the injured. Its other troops in DRC are safe and still working to keep the peace.
