A grieving mother watched her 22-year-old son get laid to rest after begging him to stay away from dangerous demonstrations. Susan Njeri spoke during the funeral service at Iyego in Kangema, Murang'a County about her final conversation with hawker Boniface Kariuki. The worried parent had phoned her boy on the morning of June 17 asking for money while warning against joining protesters. Boniface requested to chat with his brothers and sisters during that call before heading out. The devastated woman later realized her child was bidding farewell to his family. Father Johna Kariuki remembered sensing leadership qualities in his son from birth on August 28, 2002. The heartbroken dad spoke about releasing his boy despite overwhelming pain and unfulfilled dreams they shared together. Boniface had been supporting his younger siblings while making development plans with his father. The family spokesperson Emily Wanjira confirmed the young man passed away Monday at 3:15 pm. Bishop Ben Kiengei from Jesus Christ Compassionate Ministry Church conducted the service and promised fundraising assistance for better housing. Police gunfire struck down the street vendor during June 17 demonstrations in central Nairobi. Medical staff at Kenyatta National Hospital fought to save his life after the close-range shooting incident. The injured protester remained in intensive care from June 17 until his death. Religious leader Kiengei urged government officials to listen more carefully to youth concerns while pursuing peaceful solutions.
