Five of the accused men had earlier admitted their guilt to court officials. MA Quayum and Sohel ran away during the trial and never showed up for hearings. Matin got bail and stayed out of jail during the long legal process. The other four suspects remained locked up until the judge read out his final decision.

Cesare Tavella worked for a Dutch aid group called ICCO Cooperation when killers struck him down. Gunmen shot the foreign worker on September 28, 2015 near the Governor's House compound. The attack happened on Road 90 in one of Dhaka's most secure neighborhoods.
