Prominent Caribbean crime-fighting boss Martin Anthony George walked free from court after judges slapped him with a hefty bail package following serious sexual assault allegations. The 58-year-old Tobago lawyer who built CrimeStoppers International across the region must cough up TT$150,000 to stay out of jail while fighting the charges. High Court Master Indira Chinebas granted George his freedom but warned him to keep his distance from the alleged victim. The founding chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber faces accusations of grievous sexual assault and indecent assault against a young female attorney. Police claim the disturbing incident happened at his Port of Spain law offices during March. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department swooped on George at his workplace during July and hauled him away in handcuffs. The court hammered George with strict conditions that ban him from approaching the complainant by any means whatsoever. Judges demanded he maintain at least 500 metres distance from the woman at all times or face immediate arrest. The legal heavyweight previously served three separate terms on the Police Service Commission and held leadership roles throughout Tobago business circles. His impressive resume includes vice president positions with the Tobago Lawyers Association and Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and veteran counsel John Heath stepped forward to defend George against the serious allegations. The case returns to court during October for a status hearing where lawyers will update judges on progress. George currently chairs the PSC Appeals Tribunal while maintaining his stranglehold over regional crime prevention initiatives.
