Toontrack put out LA Sessions SDX, a Superior Drummer 3 expansion cut by Niko Bolas inside Studio D at The Village in Los Angeles. Eight vintage kits and a percussion combo got tracked from four spots: the piano area, the floor, the riser, and a sealed booth for drier tones.

Ambient mics even caught resonance ringing off the strings of the house grand piano. A chunk of the kits belong to drummers Bolas has worked with over the years, among them Kenny Aronoff, Steve Jordan, Russ Kunkel, Charley Drayton, Denny Fongheiser, Anthony LoGerfo, and Stella Mozgawa.

The count runs deep: 14 kicks, 14 snares, 27 toms, 21 cymbals, and four hi-hat sets. Percussion brings djembes, klong yaw, doumbeks, tablas, and djun djun, sampled by hand and with mallets.

Bolas programmed 45 ready-to-go presets, and MIDI patterns and fills arrive matched to each kit. The pack costs $179, or €179, and Superior Drummer 3 is mandatory. Toontrack keeps its engineer-led run going after Tony Visconti, Sylvia Massy, Bob Rock, and Eddie Kramer.
