Malawi's best track athletes head to Kamuzu Academy this Saturday for the country's biggest running competition. Athletics Malawi teams up with the National Council of Sports to host the 2025 championship event. Last weekend's regional contests decided which runners would advance from each area. Zomba, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu each sent their fastest competitors forward. The three regions will battle for top honors at the national level. Sixty athletes earned spots through the qualifying rounds held across the country. Men make up 34 of the competitors and women fill the remaining 26 positions. Each region picked their strongest performers to represent them at the championship. The field covers sprinters, distance runners, and athletes who compete in jumping events. These competitors will face off against each other for national titles. The championship features many different sports contests for fans to watch. Runners can enter short races like the 100 meters and 200 meters. Distance events stretch from 800 meters all the way up to 10,000 meters. Hurdle races and team relay events round out the running competitions. Field contests cover discus throwing, javelin tossing, shot put, high jump, long jump, and triple jump. Nicholas Kanyenda runs Athletics Malawi and expects great performances from the athletes. He says the regional qualifiers showed amazing talent from across the nation. The competition will crown new national champions and help find future international team members. Kanyenda believes fans will see exciting contests at Kamuzu Academy. The event helps spot athletes who might represent Malawi at world competitions. Winners take home medals and cash rewards for their efforts. Fans can show up to cheer for their favorite athletes starting at 8 AM. The public gets to see the country's top athletic talent compete against each other. This championship celebrates how much Malawi's sports programs have grown over recent years.
