The US government will end legal protection for about 532,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. These people must leave America by April 24 unless they change their immigration status through other means. President Donald Trump promised the biggest removal of non-citizens ever seen in American history, especially targeting people from Latin American countries. The protection expires just 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security publishes its new rule on Tuesday. All these immigrants arrived through a program started by former President Joe Biden in October 2022. He later expanded it in January 2023. The program lets up to 30,000 people enter each month from these four nations where human rights problems exist. Biden described this approach as helping reduce crowds at the border between Mexico and the United States in a better way for everyone involved. The organization Welcome.US tells affected immigrants they should talk with immigration lawyers right away. The Homeland Security Department wants everyone clear that this arrangement never lasted forever. They explained that parole status does not count as real admission into America or lead to permanent immigration rights by itself. Many people must make plans to return to their home countries very soon. Trump already sent more than 200 people accused of belonging to a Venezuelan gang straight to El Salvador last week. He used special wartime laws and rarely pulled out for such actions. The government of El Salvador has offered space in their prisons for both migrants and American citizens who break laws. They even promised cheaper rates for keeping these people locked up compared to normal costs elsewhere.
