US President Donald Trump wants Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza. He described Gaza as a "demolition site" during a phone call with Jordan's King Abdullah. Trump plans to make a similar request to Egypt's president. The move could be temporary or long-term, according to Trump. Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, vowed to oppose any such action. They said Palestinians will not accept displacement offers, even if presented as reconstruction efforts. Most of Gaza's two million residents have been displaced during the 15-month war with Israel. The UN estimates that 60% of structures in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. Rebuilding could take decades. Trump suggested that Arab nations could build housing for displaced Palestinians at a different location. He did not provide further details of the proposal. Displaced Palestinians in Gaza reject the idea of leaving their ancestral land. They say they will only leave as corpses. The US has previously committed to the creation of a Palestinian state, with Gaza as a key part. The US opposes any forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank. Jordan hosts more than two million Palestinian refugees, most of whom have citizenship. They are descendants of Palestinians who fled or were forced from their homes during the formation of Israel. Egypt hosts some Palestinian refugees who fled during the recent war but does not recognize them as refugees. Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has rejected any forced displacement of Palestinians into the Sinai peninsula. He stated that the only solution is an independent Palestinian state. Some far-right Israelis want to return to Gaza and establish settlements. Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005, dismantling settlements and evacuating settlers. Trump's comments came as displaced people in northern Gaza faced delays in returning home. Israel accused Hamas of breaching ceasefire terms. Trump also said he had ended former President Biden's hold on supplying 2,000-pound bombs to Israel. The US is Israel's biggest arms supplier, helping it build a technologically sophisticated military. The war in Gaza led to renewed calls for the US to reduce or end arms shipments to Israel. Critics cited the level of destruction caused by US weapons in the territory.
