A power struggle in Zimbabwe's main opposition party took a new turn. Sengezo Tshabangu gave up his court battle over who leads the party in parliament.

Tshabangu had tried to change who runs the Citizens Coalition for Change party in parliament. The High Court said he broke the law. He wanted to appeal that ruling but changed his mind on January 9.

His failed moves targeted several party leaders, including acting president Welshman Ncube. Judge Neville Wamambo said Tshabangu had no right to make these changes.

The court fight began when Ncube went to court. He said Tshabangu tried to push out members of parliament through the back door. The judge agreed with Ncube.

Tshabangu wanted to remove three members from an important committee and named himself the opposition's leader in parliament. The court said both moves were wrong.

The judge pointed out that Tshabangu ignored an earlier court order. That order told him not to remove any party members until the courts settled who had the power to make such decisions.

"This reshuffle equals a recall," Judge Wamambo said. He added that some positions Tshabangu created did not exist under the law.

When he dropped his appeal, Tshabangu offered to pay the court costs. This marks another chapter in Zimbabwe's ongoing political drama, where party control remains hotly disputed.
