Two people, a man and a woman who were likely in their late 20s or early 30s, were found on the Ethiopian side of the border. Search and rescue teams are still looking for other missing people.
The bodies were discovered hours after Kenyan authorities were allowed to enter the Ethiopian side, where the incident happened on Saturday. "Today, the team from the Kenyan side, working with their Ethiopian counterparts, accessed the area of the incident and are currently searching for the missing persons and 15 boats," said Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in a statement earlier.
Before this, CS Murkomen said Kenyan officials had been allowed to go to the area of the attack in Todonyang along the Kenya-Ethiopia border to look for missing Kenyans. Ethiopia granted this access after diplomatic talks between Kenyan and Ethiopian officials took place in Nairobi on Tuesday.
Murkomen assured everyone that the government was doing all it could to find all the missing people. At the same time, they are talking with the Ethiopian government to bring back peace to the area. "The government is doing everything possible to account for all missing persons while at the same time engaging with the Ethiopian authorities to restore lasting peace and cohesion in the area," he said.
He added that the government will give more updates on how the search and rescue efforts are going once they have more information. On February 22, 2025, a group of Kenyan fishermen were fishing as usual in Lake Turkana when a suspected Dassanech militia from Ethiopia attacked them.
Murkomen pointed out that because communication is not very good on the Ethiopian side, the Kenyan authorities only started getting information about the attack late at night. He also said that local security agencies in Turkana County quickly tried their best to figure out how bad the attack was.
They set up a desk at the Todonyang GSU camp where residents could report anyone who was missing.
