Two people missing after canoe flip on Lake Bunyonyi

Two women went missing Tuesday evening after a canoe flipped over on Lake Bunyonyi. The accident happened near Musigwe Village around 5 PM as five people traveled from Kitooma to Mugyera. Resident Dickson Kamuhanda said strong winds caused the wooden vessel to capsize when the group was returning from their gardens. Three passengers were saved, but Midias Ngyenda from Rutojo Village and a woman known as Mukotanyi remained missing Wednesday morning.

This marks another dangerous incident on Africa's second-deepest lake. Last March, two women and a baby drowned during a lake crossing. A student also drowned in August 2023, traveling to the market with a friend who survived. President Museveni promised a ferry service back in 2016 to make travel safer across the lake that spans Rubanda and Kabale districts.

The lake reaches depths of about 900 meters or nearly 3,000 feet. People must use these unsafe wooden canoes because the government never delivered the promised ferry. Officials have not released a statement about the current situation. Search teams continue looking for the missing women on the lake.
