Uganda Beats Gambia in Playoff Upset for U17 World Cup

Uganda earned their first trip to a major FIFA tournament Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Gambia. The teams faced off at Ben M'Hamed El Abdi Stadium in El Jadida. James Bogere scored twice to secure Uganda's spot in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2025 in Qatar. Both nations needed this playoff after finishing third in their Africa Cup of Nations groups.

The Ugandan team overcame early tournament struggles. In their opening match, they lost 5-0 against Morocco. They recovered with a win against Tanzania. Their 2-1 defeat to Zambia prevented automatic World Cup qualification. The team showed remarkable improvement throughout the tournament despite the setbacks.

Gambia missed a chance to make its third appearance at the U-17 World Cup, having previously competed in 2005 and 2009. The loss ends their campaign for the 2025 tournament. Their third-place group finish forced them into this crucial playoff. Uganda celebrated their historic achievement as the final whistle blew.
