Uganda Voter Registration Underway Ahead of 2026 Elections. KAMPALA, Uganda - The Electoral Commission of Uganda has begun updating the National Voters Register in preparation for the 2026 general elections. The exercise started on January 20 and will run until February 10, 2025. Ugandans aged 18 and above who have not yet registered to vote can do so at update centers in their parish of residence or origin. They must appear in person to provide their details, photograph, signature, and fingerprints. According to Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama, first-time voter applicants are required to present a recommendation letter from their local Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) or District Internal Security Officer (DISO) to verify their citizenship. "The process of confirming and establishing that you are a citizen has a security element," Byabakama told reporters in Kampala on Friday. He emphasized that security agencies are not taking over voter registration but simply assisting with citizenship verification. Already registered voters who wish to change their voting location or correct errors in their details can also do so at the update centers. They do not need to present any security recommendations. Students who were registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) during the learners project and have since turned 18 can update their details and be assigned a polling station. They also do not need to confirm their citizenship again. The Electoral Commission has engaged with police and security agencies to facilitate the issuance of recommendation letters for new applicants. Only verified citizens are eligible to be on the Voters Register, with NIRA responsible for ascertaining citizenship. Voters can verify their registration details online at https://ec.or.ug/register or their local polling station. The update exercise aims to enable all eligible Ugandans to participate in the upcoming elections. The Commission is also compiling updated registers for special interest groups, including youth, persons with disabilities, and older persons. These will be used to elect their respective councils and committees. Voter registration is taking place at update stations nationwide every day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, including weekends, until the February 10 deadline.
