The Uganda government is working hard to fix the flood problems caused by heavy rains, said Denis Hamson Obua, the Government Chief Whip. He spoke to Parliament Thursday about these efforts. He expressed his sadness for the families who lost loved ones during recent floods and asked for quick action to reduce the harm from bad weather conditions. Obua shared what scientists from the Water and Environment Ministry discovered about why the weather changed. The Indian Ocean has tropical cyclones that affect Uganda's weather patterns. During February, the sun moves nearer to the equator, which heats things. Uganda sits right on the equator, making temperatures climb very high. Obua explained that cities trap more heat than rural areas because of all the buildings, roads, and human activities. This makes urban places much hotter than the surrounding countryside. Several groups, including the Kampala Capital City Authority, Prime Minister's Office, and emergency teams, are meeting right as we speak to solve these problems. Obua admitted to Parliament that nature causes some weather disasters, but people make them worse. He said we fail to protect our environment in many ways. Everyone must become environmental defenders before things deteriorate further. Our bad habits hurt nature and create bigger problems. Many parts of Uganda face terrible flooding that kills people, forces them from their homes, and destroys property.
