[QUOTE="Munyaradzi Mafaro, post: 34271, member: 636"] Uganda Law Society criticized a High Court decision that kept opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye behind bars. The group called the ruling speculative during their Thursday press briefing in Kampala. ULS treasurer Arthur Isiko said the court lacked evidence when claiming Besigye might interfere with investigations. He stressed that bail decisions need clear legal grounds rather than assumptions. Judge Rosette Comfort Kania denied bail on April 11 despite Besigye meeting standard conditions like having a fixed address. She cited the serious nature of treason charges as her reason. At the same briefing, senior counsel Henry Kunya questioned current bail guidelines. He asked whether these rules remain relevant or need updates based on real experiences. Kunya also expressed concern about prosecution delays affecting accused persons awaiting trial. Besigye was arrested with Hajji Obeid Lutale in Kenya before being returned to Uganda. They face charges with military captain Denis Oola for allegedly seeking weapons abroad to overthrow the government. The three remain in custody until their next court appearance on April 30.
