The 61-year-old former journalist wants to represent elderly citizens from Eastern Uganda in parliament. Dominic Gidudu Mafwabi currently holds this seat and serves as Minister for the Elderly.

Opondo has led the Uganda Media Center since 2013. His resignation follows legal requirements that separate government service from election campaigns.
