Uganda Warns Travelers About Drug Risks. Uganda told its people not to carry bags for others when they travel. The warning comes as more of its people face drug problems far from home. Labor Minister Esther Anyakuni said many people sit in jails abroad. Others have gone missing in places like the Middle East and Asia. Many did not know they helped move bad drugs. "People in the Gulf lands and parts of Asia keep our people in jail for moving drugs," Anyakuni said. She added that most of these people did nothing wrong. Bad people tricked them into trouble. Saudi Arabia says it finds more and more Ugandans with drugs in its airfields. This hurts the good name Uganda wants with other lands, Anyakuni said. The warning comes as Uganda plans to meet with other East African countries to discuss people moving between countries. The talks start on Monday, February 10. Sarah Carl works with a group that helps people move safely between lands. She said many people leave their homes because of fights in places like Congo and Sudan. The meeting next week brings hope for better rules about how people can work in different East African lands. Uganda wants to keep its people safe from drug crimes as they look for work away from home. Carl said these talks mark a step toward making it safer for people to work in East Africa. Leaders want to help people move between lands without falling into danger. The government shows it cares about keeping its people safe when they travel and wants to stop bad people from using them to move drugs. These talks might help improve the lives of workers in East Africa.
