The UN Security Council approved a new African force to fight al Shabab in Somalia. This new team, called AUSSOM, will start working on January 1, 2025. It will replace ATMIS, which ends on December 31.

The new force will help Somalia's fighters. They'll work together to keep people safe and guard important buildings. Some troops already left Somalia last year. First, 2,000 soldiers went home from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi, and Djibouti.

Somalia asked to pause the next group leaving. Kenya was going to bring 754 soldiers home. Later, from October 2023 to June 2024, 4,000 more Kenyan troops came back.
