UNESCO promised to help Zimbabwe with development projects after meeting with Environment Minister Evelyn Ndlovu. The talks happened during a United Nations ocean conference taking place across France. Director-General Audrey Azoulay agreed to support wetlands protection programs and educational initiatives for young people. Zimbabwe will host the RAMSA COP15 wetlands conference at Victoria Falls from July 23 through 31. The meeting focused on protecting wetlands for future generations around the world. UNESCO already recognizes several Zimbabwe sites as world heritage locations. Victoria Falls and Mana Pools received special protection status from the global organization. Chimanimani wetlands also earned recognition for their natural importance to wildlife conservation. The minister wants Anatali Ruins added to the heritage site list for historical preservation. These designations bring international attention and funding for conservation work. The education program teaches children about ocean connections to inland water systems. South African schools already use similar programs to explain how rivers affect ocean health. Zambezi River and Save River waters eventually reach the sea after traveling hundreds of miles. Pollution from inland sources damages marine ecosystems and increases ocean temperatures. Climate change accelerates when people contaminate rivers and waterways upstream from coastal areas.
