College students honored two brave police officers who died fighting terrorists at a fancy restaurant back in 2016. They brought flowers to the spot where a memorial statue used to stand at Gulshan Police Station. The students want to rebuild the destroyed monument that remembered the fallen heroes. Police bosses have stayed quiet about who smashed the tribute and when it happened. The young people stepped up because authorities refused to take action. Five armed extremists attacked Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1st and murdered 20 innocent people. Most victims came from other countries and died during the horrible night. Assistant Commissioner Rabiul Karim and Officer-in-Charge Salauddin rushed to save hostages but lost their lives. The government built a statue called Deepto Shopoth to honor their sacrifice. Senior police officers used to bring flowers there every year. Everything changed when the Awami League government collapsed during massive protests last August. Angry crowds attacked police stations across the country and damaged many buildings. Vandals destroyed the memorial statue and covered the area with banned group posters. Hizb ut-Tahrir members put up their signs where the tribute once stood. Almost twelve months have passed but nobody has fixed the broken monument. Shahriar Ibrahim from Jahangirnagar University led his classmates to the police station on Wednesday. They stood near the smashed statue base and shouted praises for the dead officers. The students blamed the extremist group for wrecking the memorial and demanded justice. They offered to rebuild the monument themselves if police gave permission. The station commander promised to ask his superiors about the proposal.
