The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, ordered the arrest of a senior officer. The officer heads communication and IT for the army and defense ministry.

The officer allegedly took $300,000 from a country in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and was to monitor army communications in return.

Journalist Andrew Mwenda reported the news. He said the officer returned the money after being arrested.

"Gen Muhoozi is trying to clean up corruption in the army and defense ministry," Mwenda posted.

Col. Patrick Ssemakula is the UPDF Chief of Communication and IT.

The defense ministry has not officially commented. Deputy spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki would not respond to unofficial reports.

The spying claim comes as tensions rise in the region. SADC forces face strong resistance in eastern DR Congo.

The SADC mission, SAMIDRC, is fighting M23 rebels. The rebels have taken the key city of Goma in North Kivu. They plan to push toward the capital, Kinshasa.

South Africa accused Rwanda of supporting M23. This has increased diplomatic strain in the Great Lakes area.

Uganda also has troops in DR Congo for Operation Shuja. The current instability directly affects Uganda.

Last week, the UPDF said it would realign its forces in eastern DR Congo. This shows how sensitive military operations are right now.

The spying allegations could complicate Uganda's regional position and strain its ties with the SADC bloc.
