[QUOTE="Munyaradzi Mafaro, post: 31016, member: 636"] Upgrading XenForo happens almost the same way as when you first put it on your website. You can jump straight to the newest version from any older one - you do not need to install every version in between. Before you start, make sure you save copies of your XenForo files and information. This step matters a lot because once you begin upgrading, you cannot go back to the old version! You might also need to upgrade any extra tools you added. You should ask the people who made those tools if they work with the new XenForo. People upgrading from XenForo 1 need to pay extra attention. This upgrade changes many things. The extra tools from XenForo 1 will not work with XenForo 2. You must find new versions of these tools or remove them before upgrading. Any pretty designs you made for XenForo 1 will not look the same in XenForo 2. You will need to redo these changes after upgrading. Other things you change might not work right away either. Try upgrading on a test website first before changing your main website. Always save your website files before starting because the only way to go back will be using those saved files. XenForo 2.1 and newer versions let you upgrade with just one click if your server meets certain rules. Earlier versions need manual upgrading, as explained below. XenForo checks from time to time if a newer version exists for you. You can also check yourself by going to the Tools page and clicking the Upgrade check. If a newer version exists, you can choose to upgrade. Follow what the screen tells you, and remember to save your files first. Keep your web browser open until everything finishes. First, you must download the zip file with XenForo from the customer area. Click Download XenForo next to the license for the website you want to upgrade. Make sure you pick the "Download the upgrade package only" option. If you have many licenses, use the correct files for each website. The files might be different between licenses. Open the zip file on your computer. You will see an upload folder inside. You need to put everything from this folder onto your server, not the folder itself. Connect to your server and find where XenForo lives. You should see files named admin.php and css.php there. Upload all files from the upload folder to your server. You will replace many files that already exist there. Let your file program replace these files if it asks you. When uploading, make sure your program "merges" files with what sits on the server already. Some programs might just replace everything, which could make you lose important data. The upload may take time. Your website will stay closed until you finish the next step, which means people cannot visit it during this time. After uploading everything, go to the install folder on your website. For example, if your website sits at [ICODE]www.example.com/community/[/ICODE], type [ICODE]www.example.com/community/install/[/ICODE] in your web browser. The XenForo installer will open. You may need to sign in with an administrator name and password. Then, follow what the screen says to finish the upgrade. Your website will open again when everything is completes. People upgrading from XenForo 1 might need to save a new config file. The upgrade process will tell you about this at the beginning. If the new file cannot save automatically, you must put it in the src folder under your main XenForo folder. After upgrading, check if any templates or phrases need updating. The system will not change these automatically. Look under Appearance for outdated templates and phrases. You can use tools that help merge changes to your custom designs. If someone else made your design or language pack, check if they have a version for your new XenForo. When you change a template, those changes stay during upgrades unless you tell the system to change them. This helps keep your custom work safe but can also cause problems when upgrading to a newer version. After running an upgrade, always check for outdated templates right away. Important features might not work if outdated templates remain unchanged. The system will show you a list of outdated templates with a Merge option. This option compares your changed template with the new version and tries to combine them. If you change the same part that is also changed in the new version, you will have a conflict. You must decide which version to keep or how to combine both. When you click Merge, you will see what the final version looks like. Parts that merged successfully show up blue. Conflicting parts appear yellow with buttons to help fix them. After resolving conflicts, you can edit the text exactly how you want it. Sometimes, problems happen during upgrades. If the installer tries to do a fresh install instead of an upgrade, your files probably did not merge correctly. If the installer says no upgrade was found, you likely uploaded to the wrong place.
