Florence Mankosi Chirenda passed away Tuesday at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo following an extended illness. The 71-year-old served as widow to national hero Lieutenant Colonel Harold Mtandwa Chirenda. She entered the world July 10, 1954, in Kezi District within Matabeleland South province. Her educational journey began at Mtshumayeli Primary School and continued through Usher Mission secondary education. Moeng College in Botswana provided her tertiary learning experience. The Zimbabwe African People's Union sent Chirenda to Romania during the 1970s for journalism studies. Bucharest became the location where she encountered her future husband while both pursued their missions abroad. Her war veteran status reflected active participation during Zimbabwe's liberation movement. Upon returning home, she joined Zimbabwe Inter-Africa News Agency in Harare as a journalist until reaching retirement age. Her professional career demonstrated dedication to storytelling and media work. Chirenda maintained strong philanthropic commitments throughout her life while supporting various charitable causes. Gardening provided her personal sanctuary and family gathering space. Four children survive her departure, comprising three daughters and one son. Mourners currently gather at 22 Britannia Avenue in Paddonhurst, Bulawayo for memorial services.
