Engineer John Twinomujuni received the Uganda Development Champions Award for his water and sanitation work. Citizens across Uganda nominated him for this honor recognizing his service at the Ministry of Water and Environment. The commissioner helps improve clean water access throughout the country as part of his daily duties. His name will appear alongside President Museveni and other leaders when the Uganda Development Champions Journal comes out next year. The award celebrates his efforts toward reaching Uganda 2040 goals and global development targets. Twinomujuni expanded water pipe networks and built new treatment plants across urban areas. His teams increased daily water production around Kampala and brought systems to towns and rural communities. The government connected over 720,000 new customers to water supplies during the past four years. Workers finished building water systems for 26 towns and continue construction projects across 11 more locations. Officials aim to bring clean water pipes to every village and household throughout Uganda. Clean water access helps families spend time on productive activities instead of searching for safe drinking sources. The ministry reformed urban water services since 2001 to improve performance and reduce costs. Private companies and local water authorities share responsibility for delivering services to communities. Government plans focus on expanding pipe coverage and improving sanitation facilities that currently reach 74 percent of households nationwide.
