Moses Wetang'ula sent the names of Geoffrey Ruku and Hanna Cheptumo to the Committee on Appointments for review. The National Assembly Speaker made this move after President Ruto picked MP Ruku to lead Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs. Parliament must approve Ruku before he can replace Justin Muturi, who recently lost his job. President Ruto also selected Cheptumo to run the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts, and Heritage. Wetang'ula told lawmakers on Tuesday that he received these nominations from the President last Thursday. The Speaker then passed both names to the special committee, as required by law. This committee must check their backgrounds and decide if they deserve these jobs. The rules say this committee needs to finish their work and give a report to the full House within 28 days. Wetang'ula asked them to start right away and bring back results by April 24, 2025. This deadline matters because lawmakers must vote on these picks within the time allowed by law. The Gender Ministry has stayed empty since August 2024, when lawmakers rejected Stella Soi Lang'at. Parliament turned down Lang'at because she failed to show she knew enough about gender issues. The committee report said she gave weak answers about important topics in her field and seemed unprepared for tough questions about administrative and technical matters. President Ruto also proposed 14 Principal Secretaries on March 24 and 25, plus four people for ambassador positions. Different committees will check these candidates and finish their reports by April 22 and 23.
