The title of this thread says it all. I will just add to say how is the ancient Egyptian trinity sometimes thought to be similar to a Christian trinity.

The Egyptian trinity kinda looks like this:
  • Osiris — Creator/Father
  • Isis — Preserver/Mother
  • Horus — The Destroyer/Son
Whilst in Christianity you have got:
  • Jehovah — Creator/Father
  • Holy Ghost — Holy Spirit
  • The Son/Jesus — The Word

Who is Yama?

Yama is the Hindu god of death.

Shouldn't Shiva be destructive instead of being transformative?

I'd kinda consider Shiva to have qualities of Yama.

The reason I said Shiva is the Transformer is that most Hindus believe in the idea of death as a beginning of a new life on a spiritual dimension and finally back again on an earthly dimension.

You also have got to know that in this context Shiva is chiefly responsible for closing the final chapter of every individual so that's that. I hope this clarifies my point.

What's Vishnu's primary role?

So here is what you may want to learn about Hinduism in layman terms:
  • Vishnu is Brahm's manifestation as a god in a preservative form.
  • Shiva is Brahm's manifestation as a god in a destructive form.
  • Brahma is Brahm's manifestation as a god in a creative form.
Most importantly Brahm's existence is henceforth considered to be beyond the comprehension of a finite/mortal soul. In other words, Brahm is All-embracing, Unknown and Unknowable.
