Why do artists sign to other artists if their in the same lane?

Is it not hustling backward when upcoming recording artists sign with other artists if they are in the same lane as them? I don't think if you are an artist you'd be okay with artists you have signed on your record company becoming more prominent than you in the same genre of music.

The point of the music biz is for you to always shine right?

Sometimes that's the only option to get your foot into the game. You can start off with a very bad record contract and hope to get a better one once you have fulfilled your current record deal. It's all about opportunity cost and evaluating the current options you have at the moment. If you say no you might get another chance like that ever again in your entire music career.

The way I see it is this: as a young up-and-coming artist, trying to make your way into the mainstream music industry can be a daunting task. You have your big dreams of hitting it big and making it in the biz, but as you may already know, landing a record deal with one of the big labels is not an easy feat. In recent years, aspiring singers have been foregoing traditional avenues like major record labels and instead turning to established musicians in order to secure a deal.

It is true that most established musicians have influence with certain industry insiders who they can turn to for assistance in enticing younger artists to join their team. They also tend to be more open-minded when it comes to taking risks on newcomers — something that standard record labels are typically hesitant about doing.

Lil Wayne signed Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Jay-Z signed Ye and Rihanna.

Both are examples of artists signing artists that flourished.

Jay-Z really didn't want to sign Kanye West.

He just wanted him to be a music record producer and stay in that lane.

Weezy and Jay-Z are still slightly above the artist they signed.

Also, Rihanna and Ye became billionaires thanks to their own investments, not music.

Drake is more relevant than Lil Wayne right now but he's not bigger than Lil Wayne's entire discography.

Rihanna and Jay-Z have always been in different lanes. Rihanna doesn't make rap music. She was also under Def Jam bro. It's not like Jay-Z owned Def Jam during the time. He was the president during the time.

I guess it depends on the artist and the truth is some artists are selfish and feel threatened.

Y'all got it wrong. Ye flourished because of Dame Dash. Jay-Z just wanted to hoard all his best beats for himself. Dame Dash signed Kanye West to Roc-A-Fella Records. Jigga wasn't even feeling him, and Rihanna signed with Def Jam Recordings, not Roc-A-Fella Records. Both Drake and Nicki Minaj were signed to Cash Money/Young Money jointly.
