A purchase in that window delivered three twenty-digit numbers instead of one. Two were key change tokens. The third was the actual electricity. Order mattered, and it still matters for anyone catching up late. Enter the numbers out of sequence and the upgrade simply fails. Type a key change token where a credit token belongs, and the meter stops accepting new tokens altogether, which looks exactly like a hardware failure to whoever is standing on a chair with a phone torch. The fix is not a technician. ZETDC keeps a key change token lookup on its self-service portal, so you can pull your own upgrade numbers again and re-enter them in the order given, without paying anything. Credit already loaded on the meter survives the process. Only unused tokens bought before the key change die with it, and those have to be reissued at source rather than retyped more carefully. [HEADING=2]The meter itself will tell you which keys it holds[/HEADING] You can settle that question in under a minute. An upgraded meter reports a key revision number of 2, while one still running old keys reports 1, and the keypad code that displays it varies by meter make, which is why ZETDC published the check codes model by model instead of one universal shortcut. If the revision reads 2 and a freshly bought token still bounces, the cause has moved somewhere else. Every token is tied to a single meter number. A household with two meters, or a lodger buying against a landlord's account, can pay the right amount to the right utility and still be typing a number that belongs three rooms away, so check the number printed on the meter against your receipt before you blame the vendor. Tokens also work once. If someone else in the house already loaded it, your attempt fails, and the display gives no hint that this is what happened. Rule that out early. If the customer interface unit, the keypad box mounted inside the house, has genuinely failed, replacing it counts as the customer's expense rather than ZETDC's. A duplicate token produced over the counter at a vending office also carries a small fee. Neither cost is ruinous. Both catch out people who assume a rejected token means a free replacement. Your leverage sits in ZETDC's own client charter, which almost nobody quotes back at them. Complaints have to be acknowledged within 24 hours and resolved within seven working days. Suspect the meter is measuring wrongly rather than rejecting wrongly, and you can request an accuracy test, with results due within seven working days. Network faults in urban areas are meant to be attended to within 24 hours, with supply restored within 36. Those numbers only work for you if the complaint exists on paper. Ask for a reference number when you call the national contact center on 704, and write down the date and the name of whoever takes the call. A complaint with no reference is a complaint nobody has to close within seven days. Once that deadline passes without a resolution, ZERA runs a consumer complaints channel that sits above the utility, and a meter that has refused valid tokens for a week is exactly the kind of case it exists for.
