Ronwen Williams explained how his mistake cost Mamelodi Sundowns during their 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The goalkeeper tried to pass from the back but gave the ball straight to Felix Nmecha. The German midfielder easily scored into the empty net. Sundowns had been leading 1-0 through Lucas Ribeiro's early strike. Williams admitted his error helped Dortmund level the match. The South African keeper said his team likes to take risks when building attacks. He spotted Teboho Mokoena as an option but the midfielder moved away after getting a call from Marcelo Allende. Williams called it an unlucky situation that the team would learn from. He stressed that top level football punishes every mistake unlike back home where teams can recover. Dortmund scored again when Mokoena lost the ball cheaply and Serhou Guirassy put them ahead. Jobe Bellingham grabbed a third goal just before halftime after Williams dropped a simple save. The keeper spilled the ball right at Bellingham's feet for an easy finish. Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba scored late goals to make the score more respectable. Williams believes Sundowns proved they can compete with Europe's best teams. He said Dortmund players are stronger physically but mental strength matters most. The goalkeeper felt proud of his teammates' effort and fighting spirit during the match. Williams thinks the gap between African and European football is not huge after their performance.
