Uganda's election chairman said cutting off voter registration a year before the 2026 elections helps ensure proper planning and accurate voter counts.

Justice Simon Byabakama addressed criticism about the February 10, 2025, registration deadline. Some say it blocks young people who turn 18 between the cutoff date and election day from voting.

The voter update started on January 20. It lets new voters register, and current voters check their information. Uganda plans to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in early 2026.

Byabakama said the commission needs firm voter numbers to arrange ballot printing and other supplies. "You must plan, you must budget," he said. "The fundamental of a free, fair, and credible election register is this."

The early deadline serves another purpose. Starting in June 2025, Uganda will hold special interest group elections, which require an accurate voter list.

"People must know a definite, conclusive register," Byabakama said. He warned that an open-ended system could invite fraud claims. Critics might allege non-citizens were added just before election day.

The chairman stressed the deadline aims to protect election integrity, not block voters. The commission wants clear figures to handle resources and preparations effectively.

The registration update allows eligible Ugandans aged 18 and above to join the voter list. Current voters can verify their details during this period.
