Five Harare City Council officials face renewed scrutiny after prosecutors dropped their role in an alleged US$9 million fraud scheme.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission announced Tuesday it would file new charges against the group. This comes after the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew its case against Town Clerk Hosiah Chisango, Supply Chain Manager Never Murerwa, Principal Accountant Denford Zhungu, Engineering Technician Tawanda Mutenhabundo, and Principal Contracts Administrator Artkins Mandaza.

The NPA's decision left Principal Buyer Jabulani Mukomazi as the sole defendant in the case.

ZACC officials stated their position clearly. "The Commission maintains that the accused persons are criminally liable for the fraudulent awarding of the tender and should defend their actions in court," the agency said in a statement.

The anti-corruption body pledged to continue its investigation into the streetlights tender process, and the five officials are expected to face new charges.
