Zafirov vows harsh punishment after deadly floods

Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov pledged on Sunday to pursue the strictest legal penalties for those responsible for the recent Black Sea floods that resulted in fatalities. The BSP leader told Bulgarian National Radio that authorities must determine whether human negligence contributed to the disaster, which he attributed to years of accumulated institutional failures and political instability. Zafirov promised adequate measures to prevent future occurrences and did not dismiss the possibility of demolishing illegally constructed hotels.

The Water Board chief emphasized that climate change represents a primary factor behind the nation's shifting patterns between severe drought and flooding. While acknowledging water supply challenges in certain settlements, Zafirov rejected claims of a nationwide water crisis and noted that recent rainfall has provided some relief. He stated that resolving supply issues requires both locating new water sources and replacing deteriorated infrastructure networks that cause significant losses. Zafirov also addressed the Borislav Sarafov case, calling for judicial independence rather than political intervention.
