The push to extend President Mnangagwa's rule past 2028 came from party members, not from him, a top official said last weekend.

Ziyambi Ziyambi, a senior member of Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF party, told members in Mashonaland West that the president never asked for more time in office. He said the party made this choice at its meeting in Bulawayo last October.

"These plans start with local groups. They move up to each area, where people talk about them. The area leaders bring them to the national level. When everyone agrees at the big meeting, they become party rules," Ziyambi said.

He stressed that President Mnangagwa had no part in this move. "The president never said he wants to stay until 2030. We, the party members, asked for this," he added.

Ziyambi said he keeps the president out of these talks. "When I meet him, I tell him this is our business as party members. I don't want to hear his views about it," he said.

The party plans to change the rules through Parliament. They want people to vote yes when the time comes. "We must tell everyone that Zimbabweans want President Mnangagwa until 2030. This comes from us as ZANU-PF," Ziyambi said.

Party groups across Zimbabwe backed this plan after their October meeting in Bulawayo. They all agreed to push for these changes to extend the president's term.
