ZAPU Leader Warns Against Mnangagwa Term Extension. The leader of Zimbabwe's opposition ZAPU party issued a stern warning against any plans to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule beyond 2028. Sibangilizwe Nkomo told reporters in Bulawayo that his party would resist such attempts, though he stressed they do not support a military coup. "Mnangagwa sneaked into power through a military coup in 2017. He seeks to extend his rule by staging another coup against Zimbabwe's constitution," Nkomo said. "This represents a treasonous ambition." The ZAPU president criticized ZANU PF's governance since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980. He claimed the ruling party had replaced colonial authorities but maintained similar practices, continuing to dismiss citizens' concerns. Nkomo addressed the recent ZANU PF national conference held in Bulawayo last October. Party delegates had voted to extend Mnangagwa's presidential term from 2028 to 2030. "We reject claims that Zimbabweans want more suffering beyond 2028," he stated. "Only those who profit from death and suffering support extending Mr. Mnangagwa's term." The opposition leader outlined plans for resistance should Mnangagwa attempt to stay in power. "His administration will see unprecedented opposition. We'll make this country ungovernable without an electoral mandate," Nkomo declared. He called on Zimbabweans to withdraw support from Mnangagwa's government after 2028. The party plans to encourage civil disobedience and other measures to challenge any unauthorized extension of presidential power. ZAPU demands fair and transparent elections in 2028, as mandated by Zimbabwe's constitution. Nkomo emphasized that his party would respect the results of a free and fair electoral process.
