Zim and China Up Their Game with New Trade Deals

Zimbabwe started working on projects agreed upon with China during President Mnangagwa's visit last year. The countries signed 17 cooperation documents, including 14 memorandums of understanding. They plan to collaborate on investment, trade, infrastructure, mining, energy, and digital economy matters.

Mnangagwa met with a Chinese delegation led by Jiangsu Province's Executive Vice Governor Ma Xin yesterday. They talked about following through on agreements between their leaders. The Chinese officials came to strengthen partnerships in infrastructure, medicine, and solar power. Jiangsu is China's second-largest provincial economy after Guangdong. Officials believe both sides will benefit from expanded cooperation.

The Zimbabwean president visited several Chinese provinces during his trip last September. He toured technology hubs, met with Communist Party leaders, and visited historical sites. He spoke at business conferences promoting Zimbabwe's opportunities. Chinese private investments in Zimbabwe jumped from $445.9 million in 2019 to $3.4 billion in 2023.

China has funded major Zimbabwe projects like the Manhize steel plant, mining operations, and power stations. Over 472 Chinese companies received investment licenses for Zimbabwe operations. The partnership also produced Zimbabwe's new Parliament building through a Chinese grant. Senior government officials attended yesterday's meeting with the Chinese delegation.
