Zimbabwe Tightens Grip on Smuggling with New Import Rules

Zimbabwe Cracks Down on Smuggling with New Rules.

Zimbabwe is taking strong action against smuggling. The government has named 19 types of goods that will be treated as smuggled. This happens if importers cannot show proof they paid duty.

The goods include alcohol, soda, cement, clothes, shoes, and dairy items. Diapers, appliances, meat, rice, pasta, and sugar are also on the list. Tires, car parts, detergents, biscuits, candy, and soap are also included.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube announced the new rules yesterday. They start today. They are part of a larger effort to stop illegal imports.

Anyone caught with these goods must show documents proving they paid duty. If not, they will be treated as smugglers. They will have to pay the duty plus penalties.

Customers who buy from local stores will not need to show proof of duty payment. It is the responsibility of importers, makers, and sellers to have the right documents.

Since December, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has seized $2.4 million in goods, dozens of vehicles, including buses and trucks, and illegal items like food and used clothes.

Zimra is inspecting vehicles, especially those that carry goods and people across borders. They are focused on transporters and importers who do not follow the rules.
