HARARE, Zimbabwe - Zanu-PF Politburo member and Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said President Emmerson Mnangagwa does not want to change Zimbabwe's Constitution to stay in power past 2028.

Ziyambi told Zanu-PF Mashonaland West members that calls to let Mnangagwa serve beyond his second term come from the party, not the president.

"President Mnangagwa never said he wants to extend his term," Ziyambi stated. "We, the people and Zanu-PF members, expressed our wish for him to continue. If anyone claims the president intends to do this, tell them it is us, not him."

Even in private talks with Mnangagwa, Ziyambi does not mention the constitutional changes. He says the issue is driven solely by party members.

"When I meet with the president, I will say we are handling party matters that do not concern him," Ziyambi explained. "I will not even ask his views because it is our issue. We are working to achieve our goal as Zimbabweans."

Ziyambi urged Zanu-PF to mobilize voters to back the constitutional amendments in the upcoming referendum. He wants members to start campaigning right away.

"Once the amendment process begins in Parliament, we must tell people that Zimbabweans want President Mnangagwa to stay until 2030 when the referendum comes," he said. "This is Zanu-PF's wish."
