Harmer spins to ICC honor, first for SA in years
South African spinner Simon Harmer grabbed the ICC Men's Player of the Month award after absolutely torching Bangladesh's Taijul Islam and Pakistan's Mohammad Nawaz in the voting. The 36-year-old bowler snagged 17 wickets across a two-match series against India, helping his squad pull off their first Test series win there in a quarter century. His numbers were basically unreal, with an average under nine and an economy rate that barely cracked two runs per over. Harmer dedicated the whole thing to his squad and his family back home, saying anything beyond playing for his country is basically just extra. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma snatched her first-ever women's award after getting called up as a last-minute replacement. She dropped 87...
Son fears Suu Kyi could be dead, no word in years
Kim Aris is basically freaking out because he has no idea if his 80-year-old mom Aung San Suu Kyi is even alive anymore. The Myanmar junta has kept her locked up since they took over back in 2021, and he hasn't heard anything from her in years. She's got heart problems and other health issues, but nobody has been allowed to see her in over two years. Her son is hoping the junta might cut her a break around their upcoming sham elections, maybe move her to house arrest or something. She's currently serving 27 years for charges she says are fake, and the last letter he got mentioned how brutal the temperatures were in her cell. He's trying to get countries like Japan to pressure the military during this election period. The whole...
The party led by a fugitive is banned, and no election role is allowed
The press secretary for Bangladesh's chief adviser basically shut down any chance of the Awami League getting into the next election. Shafiqul Alam said no democratic country would let a group run by someone he called a terrible criminal do anything political. He pointed out that Sheikh Hasina, who leads the party, is hiding from the law after getting a death sentence for crimes against humanity and is apparently calling for terrorist attacks. The election commission just dropped the schedule for voting and a referendum on constitutional reforms happening on the same day in February. AMM Nasir Uddin, the chief election commissioner, announced everything in a recorded speech that aired on state TV. Candidates have until late December...
Bangladesh juniors net record bonus after World Cup debut
Bangladesh's junior hockey squad pulled off their best showing ever at the World Cup in India and got handed serious cash for their trouble. The team grabbed 17th place out of 24 squads while winning the Challenger Trophy, and defender Amirul Islam went absolutely nuts with 18 goals across six games to lead the whole tournament in scoring. The Bangladesh Hockey Federation threw a party at Kurmitola Air Force Base, where players split 65 lakh taka in bonuses, with Amirul getting an extra 5 lakh for being a monster on the field. Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan kicked in 20 lakh from his own pocket on top of the federation's 40 lakh contribution. Amirul basically said they want proper government recognition like other sports get...
Pakistan condemns the Sudan attack on Bangladeshi peacekeepers
Pakistan threw shade at whoever attacked UN peacekeepers in Kadugli, Sudan, after six Bangladeshi soldiers with UNISFA got killed and others were wounded. The government sent condolences to Bangladesh and said they stand with families dealing with the aftermath while calling Blue Helmets essential for keeping civilians safe and maintaining regional stability. Officials want a quick investigation to figure out who pulled this off and make sure they face consequences. Pakistan said it'll keep working with Security Council members and the broader global community to protect peacekeepers stationed everywhere, since these troops sacrifice themselves trying to maintain peace under the UN banner.
CID closes Nazmul Huda murder case after 47 years
CID wrapped up their probe into Colonel Khandaker Nazmul Huda getting murder during the wild 1975 military chaos and basically said the killing happened, but nobody alive can get charged. His daughter filed the case decades later when she was grown, naming former president Ziaur Rahman and some military brass, but investigators couldn't find solid proof linking any of them to pulling triggers. They think Lt Col Abu Taher might have been involved, but he got executed already, and the whole thing went down during such a massive clusterfuck that tracking specific shooters became impossible. The report mentioned three officers getting killed at the MP hostel inside the parliament grounds when mutinous soldiers dragged them outside and shot...
BNP nominee accused of threatening rival’s aide
A former Chhatra Dal boss said BNP's Narayanganj-2 pick, Nazrul Islam Azad, threatened to beat him up and kick him out of the neighborhood because he backed a different candidate. Abu Hanif Russel Bhuiyan used to run the district student wing and claims Azad went off on him for supporting Mahmudur Rahman Suman instead. A three-minute phone recording supposedly catching Azad making threats blew up on social media. Russel lives near Azad in the Pachrukhi area of Araihazar but politically rides with Suman, who also wants that parliamentary seat. The audio allegedly has Azad telling Russel to stay out of Pachrukhi or face consequences, plus accusing him of working with a former Awami League member. Russel denies everything in the clip...
China-funded women’s hall set for Dhaka University
China is dropping a massive project at Dhaka University to build housing for female students, and Ambassador Yao Wen said construction should kick off early next year after years of planning. The Bangladesh-China Friendship Hall is getting financed by the Chinese government with a budget of around 244 crore taka, and a technical crew has already landed in Dhaka to scout locations near Jagannath Hall's playground. Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan mentioned that women make up over half the student body but don't have nearly enough dorm space. The ambassador pointed out that China hands out more than 10,000 scholarships, with about half going to women, though there aren't any programs exclusively for female applicants. University officials...
Bangladesh U19 crush Nepal, eye semi-final spot
Bangladesh's U19 squad stomped Nepal after wrecking Afghanistan earlier in the Asia Cup tournament at the ICC Academy Ground. Mohammad Sobuj and Saad Islam bowled Nepal out for a pathetic 130 runs before Zawad Abrar went off with an unbeaten 70 that had seven boundaries and three sixes. The team chased down the target with seven wickets left and way too much time on the clock. The chase started rough when two batters got dismissed early, but Zawad and Kalam Siddiki Aleen posted a 92-run partnership that fixed everything. Kalam added 34 before getting out, and Zawad earned player of the match honors for carrying the lineup home. Bangladesh needs one more win against Sri Lanka to lock up their semifinal spot for a potential three-peat...
