Gweru Council Suspends 4 Over Funeral Protests
In a shocking and tragic incident, two Gweru City Council employees, Richard Longwe and Mary Svinurai, lost their lives while working under a manhole. They choked on poisonous gases, leaving their colleagues and loved ones devastated. The funeral for these two dedicated workers was held in Gweru over the weekend, but protests and accusations from other council workers marred it. They booed and remonstrated with management, accusing them of negligence and failing to provide adequate protective gear that could have saved Longwe and Svinurai's lives. The funeral wake was tense and emotional, with workers expressing anger and frustration towards the council's leadership. In the aftermath of this tragic event, the Gweru City Council has...
Headman Accused of Overstepping Jurisdiction
Headman Chengetai Chigodora, a maverick traditional leader, is being accused of overstepping his mandate. He has been presiding over cases that are far beyond his jurisdiction. Several other headmen are also being accused of usurping the authority of chiefs. The Manica Post investigated and found that there are disputes that the chief's community court should handle, not the headman's primary court. This practice goes against the Traditional Leaders Act, which says cases can't be transferred from a higher court to a lower court. Mr Fungai Mbetsa, a Ministry of Local Government and Public Works director, explained the legal standing of headmen's courts. He said only a chief can authorize transferring a case to a headman's court. If...
Zimbabweans Endure Extended Power Outages
Zimbabwe is facing really bad power cuts right now. People's lights stay off for more than a day in some places. This is happening because the country's two main power plants are having trouble making enough electricity. ZESA says one of its big power plants at Hwange isn't working properly. The other plant at Kariba Dam can't make much power because the water is too low, so many homes and businesses are in the dark. In some towns, like Chitungwiza, people only got power back late Thursday night. But after just three hours, everything went dark again. Many people in the capital city, Harare, had no power for a whole day on Tuesday. ZESA's power plants are still producing electricity. Hwange produces 874 megawatts, Kariba produces...
Harare Cops Suspended for Taking Bribes
Two cops in Harare were caught on video taking money from drivers. Now, they're off the job while their bosses investigate. The police department also wants to find all the drivers who gave them the money. The police caught one bus driver and his helper last week and are still looking for others involved in this mess. The two police officers, James Chifamba and Trymore Mukunza had to go to court. The judge, Mrs. Gofa, kept them in jail because they broke the law while working as cops. After the video spread around, the police grabbed two buses and arrested their workers. The top police spokesman, Paul Nyathi, says they're still working on the case. The video showed the cops taking money from drivers on the Harare-Mutare Road near...
Bulawayo Officials Charged in Corruption Case
Two top Bulawayo City officials are in hot water over bribery claims. The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and Finance Committee Chair Mpumelelo Moyo. The officials got into trouble after they asked for money from a business that wanted to build in the city. ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu says they wanted $20,000 from Labenmon Investments. The company had asked to make a cement mixing plant. The story began last year when Labenmon tried to get land but failed. They tried again this April and got approval for 5.6 hectares. That's when the trouble started. The two officials went to Tsitsi Mapfumo from Labenmon and asked for cash. They said the money would be split among 20 city council members...
Justice Served: ZRP Officer Guilty of Murder
Cuthbert Mupfuki, a 37-year-old police officer from Buhera, stabbed his wife to death. He believed Brenda Manyara was seeing another man. Mupfuki used an okapi knife to stab her many times all over her body. The courts found him guilty of murder. They sentenced him to 15 years in prison. Mupfuki worked for the Zimbabwe Republic Police. He was part of the Support Unit, Sierra Troop, Changadzi. Justice Isaac Muzenda presided over the case at the Mutare High Court. He considered that Mupfuki had already paid the deceased's family 30 cows as an apology. The terrible attack happened on October 10 last year. Mupfuki stabbed Manyara repeatedly with a knife. She was badly hurt and died immediately at the scene of the crime.
ZESA Apologizes for Worsening Power Outages
The Republic of Zimbabwe faces more blackouts because of problems at its biggest power plant. The power company, ZESA, says the Hwange power plant has broken down again. This old plant often has troubles because its machines are outdated. The situation is worsening because another power plant at Kariba isn't making much electricity. The dam doesn't have enough water to make power like it usually does. ZESA's workers are trying to fix the broken equipment at Hwange. The company says sorry to its customers for all the trouble. The same power plant had another breakdown three months ago that caused similar problems. The power cuts are hitting people hard, especially in Harare, the capital city. Many homes there have no electricity for...
