Canadian MPs hear Rohingya stories, hope rises in Cox’s Bazar
Some Canadian politicians rolled through the Cox's Bazar refugee camps to check out what nearly a million Rohingya people are dealing with after they bounced from Myanmar. Senator Salma Ataullahjan and MPs Salma Zahid and Sameer Zuberi spent two days walking around the camps, talking to kids and families who are stuck living in limbo without much hope for the future. Human Concern International set up the whole trip because most international groups have been backing off while the situation keeps getting worse. A teenage girl told the senator she wants to teach someday but worries her education dreams are completely cooked, and another young guy explained how everyone wants to go home but only if it's actually safe. The women there...
DU prayers unite campus, Khaleda Zia’s recovery in focus
Dhaka University threw together a prayer session at their Senate building mosque for Khaleda Zia after her health went downhill. Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan showed up with a bunch of faculty members and staff to ask for her recovery, and he gave a short speech about how she contributed to the country regardless of which party people support. The student wing of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal ran their separate prayer thing at the central campus mosque with Quran recitation before wrapping up with another round of prayers. Leaders from the group attended along with some professors from different departments who all asked for the former prime minister to get better.
Tax files seized in graft probe, two ex-leaders under fire
The courts in Dhaka gave the ACC permission to grab tax records for former lawmaker Mirza Azam and his spouse Dewan Aleya because corruption probes need that financial paperwork. Judge Md Sabbir Faiz signed off on the whole thing after anti-corruption officials said they needed those files to do their jobs properly. The same judge also let investigators seize documents for ex-DSCC mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and his wife Afrin Taposh. The commission claims Taposh pulled in around 73 crore taka through shady means, and his bank accounts moved over 539 crore in sketchy transactions. His wife apparently worked with him to stack up another 6 crore illegally, and her accounts showed around 71 crore worth of suspicious money...
Pakistan bowlers crush Sri Lanka, tri-series ends in style
Pakistan absolutely demolished Sri Lanka in the tri-series final at Rawalpindi Stadium after their bowlers choked out the visitors for just 114 runs. Mohammad Nawaz and Shaheen Shah Afridi each grabbed three wickets while the Lankan batting lineup completely collapsed, dropping nine wickets for only 30 runs after looking decent at 84-1. Kamil Mishara smashed 59 runs for the losing side before everything went sideways, and then Pakistan cruised to victory with eight balls left on the clock. Babar Azam stayed unbeaten on 37 to seal the win after Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan got things rolling with a solid opening partnership. Skipper Dasun Shanaka admitted his squad failed to capitalize on their early momentum, while Pakistan boss...
Shuvosangho turns a teary farewell bright with exam gifts
Bashundhara Shuvosangho showed up at Bamonpara Government Primary School in Meherpur Sadar and handed out school supplies to 18 fifth graders right before their big completion exam. The kids got notebooks, pens, geometry boxes, and other gear that turned what's usually a sad goodbye into something way more hype. SM Rafiqul Alam Bakul ran the event as district president while Yadul Momin from Kaler Kantho gave a speech about fresh starts and how the organization does charity work around the country. Headteacher Fouzia Afroze Tuli told the students to use their new stuff for the test and also reminded them to push back against drugs and child marriage in their communities.
Tarique’s homecoming hinges on politics, travel pass ready
The government told Tarique Rahman he could bounce back to Bangladesh whenever he wants because they'll hook him up with an emergency travel document in like 24 hours. Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain said the acting BNP chairman just needs to say the word, and officials will process a one-day pass for people without valid passports. Tarique posted on social media that he really wants to see his sick mom Khaleda Zia but can't freely make that call because of how messy the political situation is right now. The interim government backed up what Touhid said by confirming there aren't any roadblocks stopping him from coming home. Khaleda is still in critical condition at the hospital without any changes to her status, and doctors...
Sagar-Runi case drags on, probe deadline pushed yet again
The court pushed back the investigation deadline for the Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi double homicide yet again, marking the 122nd extension since the couple got killed at their West Rajabazar apartment back in 2012. Their kid was home when it happened, and authorities have been fumbling this case for over a decade without filing any actual charges. RAB originally had the investigation after taking it from the Detective Branch, but they kept asking for more time without producing results. The High Court eventually yanked the case away from them and set up a special task force through the Home Affairs Ministry with PBI running point. The new team has six months to wrap things up, and they pulled in senior officers from different law...
Tannery workers shortchanged again, pay and safety still lag
A new report showed that most leather factory employees at the Hemayetpur industrial zone are getting completely screwed over on pay and safety standards. The Bangladesh Tannery Workers Union and Solidarity Center dropped these findings after checking out 121 facilities and talking to 225 people who work there. Almost 80 percent of the workforce is making less than what the government says they should earn, and about two-thirds are stuck with temporary contracts instead of permanent positions. Workers complained about pulling 10-plus-hour shifts without getting proper overtime rates, dealing with terrible ventilation, and never receiving any training on how to stay safe around hazardous materials. Women at these plants said they barely...
BNP drops Victory Day plans, Khaleda Zia’s health stalls show
BNP scrapped all their Victory Day events because Khaleda Zia is still stuck in the ICU at Evercare Hospital without any improvement. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi broke the news at a press conference and shot down any talk about flying her overseas for treatment since the medical team hasn't greenlit that move yet. Khaleda's personal doc said they've got physicians from America, Britain, Singapore, and China all working together on her case remotely. Her daughter-in-law is handling the coordination with those international experts while local doctors run point on everything happening in Bangladesh. The party asked everyone to stay away from the hospital and just pray from home instead of showing up in person.
