Nigerian club Rivers United fell to Egyptian champions Pyramids FC by three goals to nil during their opening CAF Champions League fixture at a venue in Cairo. Forward Ahmed Atef netted a hat trick for the hosts, with all three strikes arriving after halftime.
The visiting squad, managed by Finidi George, defended stubbornly through the opening 45 minutes and prevented clear scoring opportunities. However, their resistance crumbled once Atef broke through seven minutes into the second period, then doubled the advantage five minutes later before completing his treble with a third strike.
Rivers United will face Moroccan side RS Berkane at home in Uyo for their second group stage match.
