Blue Jays rout Yankees as Canada’s pride soars in playoffs
Before both games, the New York Yankees lost to the Blue Jays over the weekend, nearly 45,000 Toronto fans stood silent for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” then applauded as the anthem ended. Later, chants against the Yankees began after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a grand slam, giving Toronto a 9-0 lead. The respect shown for the anthem contrasted with earlier this year, when many Canadians booed it in response to President Trump’s tariff threats and talk of making Canada a U.S. state. The Blue Jays’ playoff run comes as U.S.-Canada political tensions are high, with Prime Minister Mark Carney set to meet President Trump again to seek relief from tariffs. The series has become a symbol of national pride for many Canadians. As the Blue Jays...
Tennessee race draws Trump ally, Jan. 6 pardoned candidate
Nineteen candidates, including experienced lawmakers, newcomers, and a man pardoned by President Trump for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, are running in Tennessee’s first special congressional election in nearly 40 years. The race for the Middle Tennessee seat, vacated by Republican Mark Green in July, is expected to favor Republicans. Matt Van Epps, endorsed by Trump, Gov. Bill Lee, and Green, stands out among a crowded Republican field. Turnout has been low in early voting across 14 counties. Democratic contenders, including state Rep. Bo Mitchell, Vincent Dixie, and Aftyn Behn, have focused on energizing voters in the Nashville area. The general election is scheduled for Dec. 2.
Conversion therapy fight returns as Colorado ban hits court
For over ten years, most experts have agreed that counseling aimed at changing the sexual orientation of gay teenagers, called conversion therapy, is harmful. Major medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association, have opposed such therapy and highlighted its risks, like depression and hopelessness. By 2024, about half of U.S. states had limited or banned conversion therapy for minors, with support from both political parties in some cases. Debates have shifted to therapy for transgender youth, with some groups supporting talk therapy that directs transgender minors to live according to their birth sex. The Supreme Court will soon consider a case involving Colorado's ban...
Bystanders lift a helicopter in Sacramento crash rescue
A medical helicopter crashed on U.S. Highway 50 in east Sacramento, California, on Monday, leaving three people in critical condition, according to officials. The incident occurred around 7 p.m., and the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the scene. Fire officials asked about 15 bystanders to help lift the helicopter so they could free a woman trapped underneath. The helicopter had dropped off a patient at the UC Davis Medical Center before the crash, and there were no medical patients on board. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.
ZIMRA official Raymore Machingura faces corruption probe
Raymore Tafadzwa Machingura, a senior official at the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, faces serious allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and unexplained wealth. A dossier and a close source claim that Machingura has appeared before several internal disciplinary hearings, but no decisive action has been taken. The source alleged that Machingura boasts about political connections, naming a senior Zanu-PF politician from Chipinge Central to shield himself from accountability. Documents suggest Machingura failed to declare several assets as required by ZIMRA rules, raising concerns about wealth that far exceeds his known salary. The dossier accuses him of using posts at Plumtree, Mutare, Beitbridge, and Bulawayo to engage in illicit...
Mnangagwa's betrayal of Chiwenga fuels ZANU-PF power crisis
The political fallout between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga marks a significant shift in Zimbabwe’s power structure, exposing the instability of the country’s post-coup leadership. General Chiwenga played a central role in Mnangagwa’s ascent, utilizing his military influence to facilitate the removal of former President Robert Mugabe in 2017. Their alliance once appeared strong, but recent actions suggest Mnangagwa sees Chiwenga as a rival, not an ally. Reports indicate that Mnangagwa has begun grooming Kudakwashe Tagwirei as a successor, sidelining Chiwenga from key decisions and empowering youth leaders to undermine his influence. These moves are viewed as efforts to neutralize Chiwenga’s...
Mnangagwa ally Levison Chambati slams calls for ouster
Levison Chambati, a prominent supporter of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has called on Zimbabweans to end demands for the President to leave office, describing such calls as unfair and unhelpful. Posting on social media, Chambati argued that blaming leaders instead of contributing to national development undermines the country’s progress. He compared current criticism of Mnangagwa to the previous opposition faced by the late President Robert Mugabe, noting that those who benefited from the Land Reform Program later joined calls for Mugabe’s removal. Chambati said Mnangagwa has established a foundation for a modern and self-sufficient Zimbabwe, but still faces the same opposition. He urged citizens to offer ideas and solutions rather...
Killer Zivhu warns ZANU PF over Chiwenga power struggle
Former ZANU PF Chivi South legislator Killer Zivhu has warned party members reportedly plotting against Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, cautioning that they may be underestimating the determination of a soldier. Tensions within ZANU PF have been rising, with supporters of President Emmerson Mnangagwa accused of stepping up efforts to discredit Chiwenga. Former Norton legislator Temba Mliswa recently linked Chiwenga to longstanding corruption allegations from the late President Robert Mugabe’s administration, such as the disappearance of more than $15 billion. On his social media account, Zivhu advised those opposing Chiwenga to consider the strength and resolve of soldiers before challenging them. His statement has intensified...
Zimbabwe war veterans blast Mnangagwa over poverty, 2030 bid
Several war veterans in Zimbabwe have expressed disappointment over what they describe as ongoing neglect by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government and the ZANU-PF party. Members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association from Harare and Manicaland provinces said they face poverty, unfulfilled promises, and unpaid school fees for their children. Many veterans reported that their children have dropped out of school or are unable to access university transcripts because of tuition arrears. Veterans accused War Veterans Minister Monica Mavhunga and ZANU-PF War Veterans League Secretary Douglas Mahiya of failing to improve the welfare of veterans. Some criticized efforts to extend Mnangagwa’s term to 2030, saying it is...
