Government officials have kicked off construction work on the massive 60-kilometer Gwanda-Maphisa Road rehabilitation project across Matabeleland South Province. Workers have already tackled the initial 10-kilometer stretch as part of preparations for the 2026 Independence Day celebrations. The ambitious infrastructure upgrade will slash travel times between Gwanda and surrounding districts while boosting economic opportunities. Officials expect the entire road project to wrap up by early next year as part of legacy development initiatives. The upgraded route will connect vital economic centers including Arda Antelope, Makwe Irrigation Scheme, border posts, and tourist attractions in Matobo.
