He claims Kiir has ruled with an iron fist for two decades without bringing peace or stability. The opposition says half the population lives in displacement camps because of the ongoing conflict. About 70 percent of citizens survive below the poverty line despite the country having oil wealth. The rebels accuse the administration of military dictatorship, tribalism, corruption, and economic mismanagement. Oyet asked all citizens, including youth, women, civil society, and religious groups, to defend...
Uganda Takes Power Back From Umeme After 20 Years
Uganda ended its 20-year electricity contract with private firm Umeme Limited last month. The government took back control through its state-owned Uganda Electricity Distribution Company on April 1. President Yoweri Museveni had long criticized Umeme for charging high rates that hurt business growth. He previously told Ugandans that the company focused more on profits than helping the nation develop. Umeme officials claim they improved the power system during their management term. The company increased customer connections from 250,000 to over 2 million over two decades. They expanded the electrical network from 17,000 kilometers to 44,000 kilometers. Through better management practices, Umeme also reduced power losses from 38 percent...

He plans to address the public later. His return fuels talk about his possible run for president in 2027. Several politicians have already endorsed him as their preferred candidate. Matiangi served as a powerful official during former president Uhuru Kenyatta's administration. He stayed away from Kenya after President William Ruto won office. The Jubilee Party recently...
Shipping Industry Going Net Zero by 2050
UN shipping deal aims to cut greenhouse gases through new rules starting in 2027. The plan targets large vessels over 5,000 tons, which create most maritime carbon emissions. Global shipping causes nearly three percent of the world's greenhouse gases as it moves 80 percent of international trade. The agreement includes two main parts to clean up the industry. Ships must meet stricter fuel standards that reduce pollution over time. Vessels exceeding emissions limits must pay fees, while clean ships earn rewards. The money collected will fund research for greener technology across the industry. IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez praised countries for working together on climate action. The framework creates a special fund to help...
Kenya Drops Import Levies on EAC Nuts and Oils
Kenya dropped import fees on nuts and oil crops from East African countries for companies in special trade zones. Agriculture officials issued this change through a legal update that starts April 17. The new rule helps businesses in Export Processing Zones enjoy better trade with regional partners like Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Dr Bruno Linyiru from the Agriculture and Food Authority announced the exemption aligns with recent finance laws. These crops make up over one percent of the national GDP and create many jobs across the country. Farm authorities worry about low production despite the high potential for these valuable crops. Kenya spends billions importing cooking oils every year instead of making enough at home. The...
