Let's Forget Politics and Get Liberia Moving
Ghana's Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin told Liberia's lawmakers to stop fighting and start working together. He talked to the House of Representatives in Monrovia last Thursday about finding ways to agree. He said political battles should not stop the country from moving forward. He asked them to heal old hurts and find a middle ground when they disagree. Speaker Bagbin said every democracy has arguments, but leaders must rise above party fights to serve regular people. He reminded the lawmakers their main job is to help everyday Liberians. He stressed that running a country means putting citizens ahead of politics. He pointed out how tempting it becomes to only listen to people who share your views. The Speaker from Ghana mentioned...
South Sudan on Edge, Peace Talk Needed Now
South Sudan faces a major risk of new fighting. Leaders of the Tumaini Peace Initiative want more help from nearby countries and world groups. They asked the African Union, United Nations, and others to talk with all sides. These peace talks started last year on May 9 in Nairobi, Kenya. They tried to bring together groups who stayed out of the 2018 peace deal. Sadly, peace efforts have not worked well yet. The country struggles with many problems that break the peace agreement. Leaders made changes without permission, arrested important people, and ignored parts of the deal. These actions caused more local fights and made people distrust each other. Security forces recently arrested three top officials who support Vice President Riek...
NRM rejects Kawempe North vote, legal fight ahead
Uganda's ruling party, NRM, refused to accept defeat in the Kawempe North by-election, which NUP candidate Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola won. The party leaders made this choice during their Central Executive Committee meeting on Friday, March 14, 2025. The next day, through Secretary General Richard Todwong, they released a statement. The NRM claimed voters faced violence and unfair treatment at polling stations. They blamed supporters from opposition parties NUP and FDC for these problems. The ruling party also accused election officials of taking away voting rights from 50,000 registered citizens by canceling results from several polling places. Nalukoola captured the parliament seat with 17,764 votes compared to NRM candidate Namabi...
SADC says goodbye to DRC troops after Harare meeting
SADC leaders agreed Thursday to withdraw their soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo step by step. The decision came during a big meeting held in Harare, where Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa led talks about safety problems in eastern Congo. These regional heads expressed worry about worsening danger, especially after M23 rebels took over Goma and Bukavu cities and cut off roads needed for food and supplies. The leaders want peace talks involving everyone instead of just fighting. They promised to keep helping Congo stay safe, as written in their 2003 defense agreement. This troop removal happens exactly when M23 fighters keep moving forward and taking important areas in both North and South Kivu provinces. Congo's...
Uganda to give kids four doses of malaria vaccine
Uganda plans to give children four doses of the malaria vaccine as part of its fight against the disease. The country just received 2.278 million vaccine doses worth $8.88 million from Gavi through UNICEF on March 7. Health officials say this vaccine will help reduce severe cases and deaths among young kids, adding another weapon to their battle against malaria alongside mosquito nets, spraying, quick treatment, seasonal prevention, and killing mosquito larvae. Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng explained the vaccine works alongside other tools rather than replacing them. Children will receive their first shot at six months old, with follow-up doses at seven, eight, and eighteen months. Malaria remains a top killer in Uganda...
Hailstorm Wrecks Kalangala Police Barracks, Three Dead
A terrible hailstorm struck Bugala Island early today, killing three people near the Kalangala District Police station. The powerful storm blew in from the east side of Kalangala and tore through the area with devastating force. It ripped apart almost all housing for police officers and damaged part of the main station's roof. Regional Police Spokesman Twaha Kasirye confirmed three deaths from the disaster. He named Detective Sergeant Mujasi Michael as one victim, plus two regular citizens whose names haven't been released yet. Many other cops and local people suffered bad injuries during the violent weather event. Medical teams rushed the hurt survivors to Kalangala HC1V for emergency treatment. Recovery crews found the bodies and...
US expels Rasool for racist remarks, straining ties
The United States kicked out South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool because he made racist statements against President Donald Trump and white American voters. This happened on February 11, 2025, making the tense relationship between both countries even worse. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Rasool must leave, calling him persona non grata. Rubio said the ambassador hates America and hates President Trump. Breitbart reported that Rasool accused Trump of using a supremacist instinct and white victimhood as a dog whistle during the 2024 elections. These comments caused major problems in Washington. Semafor found that since Trump became president, U.S. State Department officials and key Republicans refused to meet with Rasool...
Kagame promotes Gashugi as Rwanda SOF chief
Paul Kagame has given Colonel Stanislas Gashugi a big promotion. Rwanda's president made him a Brigadier General and immediately put him in charge of the Special Operations Force. This new job became available because Major General Ruki Karusisi left the position. The military sent Karusisi back to work at Defense Headquarters instead. Nobody has said exactly why Karusisi lost his command job. Many people think this change helped Rwanda reorganize its special forces because of the dangers in nearby countries. Reports claim Rwanda's special forces under Karusisi worked inside Congo helping M23 rebels. Rwanda says these reports are false. Countries around the world want Rwanda to pull its soldiers out of Congo and stop helping armed...
Teachers Are Still Waiting on Their Pay
Secondary school teachers received promotions over a year ago, yet we still wait for the Malawi Government to keep its word. Many teachers face money troubles because of these broken promises. The government promoted me last February, but I only started seeing my new pay in October. They never gave me back pay for March through September, plus they paid me less than they should have. This leaves me broke and feeling defeated about my job. Some of my fellow teachers never saw a penny of their new salaries or back pay. Many never even received official letters confirming their promotions. Education officials sent a note on May 9, 2024, saying everyone would have their money by June. That date came and went with empty pockets for most...
