Africell 9K Mangrove Drive Supercharges Gambia Shores

Africell planted 9,000 mangrove trees on Saturday June 14th as part of their 25th anniversary celebration. The phone company wants to plant 25,000 trees across The Gambia to mark 25 years of business. Workers placed the young trees along rivers and coasts where climate change damaged the land. Local people and young volunteers helped with the tree planting event. The Africell Impact Foundation organized the work to help protect the environment.

Company head Hussein Diab-Ghanem said mangroves fight climate change better than other trees. These special trees soak up four times more carbon from the air than forest trees do. Mangroves stop ocean waves from washing away beaches and give fish safe places to live. Many fishing families depend on mangrove areas to make money from catching fish. The trees also clean dirty water and make it safe for sea animals.

Scientists praised Africell for planting mangroves because rising seas threaten coastal areas. Fish need healthy mangrove forests to breed and feed their young. People from Sanyang community and government workers joined the tree planting ceremony. Africell started planting trees across the country since January 2025. The company works on education and health projects through their foundation program.
