Uganda's attorney general asked parliament Tuesday to delay talks about jail delays until justice leaders can meet.
Attorney General Kiwanuka Kiryowa said Justice Minister Norbert Mao tried to see Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo last week. The meeting failed because court officials had other duties.
"We cannot make this statement today," Kiryowa told lawmakers. "The justice minister sought time with the chief justice and his team. They worked on a key ruling last week."
Court leaders attend a judges' meeting this week through Friday. Mao wants to speak with them before he reports to parliament.
Many inmates stay in jail for months or years before trial. This concerns lawmakers who demand faster court cases.
The justice minister plans to meet court chiefs after their current duties end. He will then bring his findings to parliament.
The delays affect how fast people see a judge. MPs want changes to help courts work better.
