AMD Magnus APU ignites console war between PlayStation 6 and Xbox

AMD develops a powerful gaming processor that may appear in future PlayStation or Xbox consoles. The chip carries the codename Magnus and features an unusual design with separate graphics and processing components. Engineers connected a large 264-square-millimeter graphics section to a smaller processor section using advanced bridging technology. The graphics portion uses a 384-bit memory pathway that exceeds current console specifications. This configuration suggests the processor targets high-performance gaming applications.

The processor contains eleven computing cores split between standard and compact designs. AMD lists Magnus under its custom console division rather than standard computer products. Industry observers compare the naming pattern to previous console processors like those powering Steam Deck devices. The square design resembles previous PlayStation hardware architectures created by Sony engineer Mark Cerny. However, some experts believe the expensive design better matches Microsoft's Xbox development approach.

The processor will contain eighty specialized graphics computing units for advanced visual processing. Analysts debate whether Sony or Microsoft commissioned this custom chip design. The final determination awaits official announcements from console manufacturers about their next-generation gaming systems.
