AMD Medusa Point APUs ditch RDNA 4 for mobile chips

AMD decided to leave out RDNA 4 graphics from their next Zen 6 "Medusa Point" laptop chips. Developers found proof in GitHub code that RDNA 4 (labeled as "GfxIp12") will only appear in separate graphics cards. The current Radeon RX 9000 cards will be the only products using this latest graphics technology. According to technical papers, AMD plans to stick with RDNA 3.5 graphics past their Zen 5 chips, and might later switch to UDNA for built-in graphics.

The new Medusa Point design puts together a 12-core Zen 6 processor made on TSMC's 3 nanometer process with an input/output chip built on N4P. This marks a big change from how AMD currently builds laptop chips as single pieces. Early rumors hint these processors might come with 3D V-Cache options, using the same stacking method as Zen 5 chips. Both memory systems and AI processing units should receive major upgrades. Without RDNA 4 graphics, these chips might struggle to run newer features like FSR 4 technology.

AMD plans to launch these Zen 6 Medusa Point processors in 2026. They aim at expensive laptop computers, building upon what AMD offers with their current Strix Halo products. The chiplet approach lets AMD create more powerful laptop processors than before, even though they skipped adding the newest graphics architecture inside them.
